The Canadian Romani Alliance is delighted to share that we are beginning an exciting new community partnership with Harvard University. The goal is to research and document discrimination experienced by Roma in Canada.
‘Protective Self-Effacement? The Impact of Stigmatization on Canada’s Roma Minority’
is a research project partnership between the Canadian Romani Alliance and
the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University
The purpose of this Research Project ‘Protective Self-Effacement? The Impact of Stigmatization on Canada’s Roma Minority’ is to conduct semi-structured interviews with 100 Roma and 20 non-Roma people living in Canada. A set of interview questions for each of the two groupings of interviewees has been provided by Harvard University. These interviews will be conducted in Hamilton and Toronto.
This study will explore the realities and the struggles of Canadian Romani people who may experience stigma and discrimination, the types of stigma and discriminatory incidents they face, and the downstream consequences of stigma.
A comparable study, using a questionnaire rather than indepth interviews, was completed in the United States in 2020 with 363 Romani American Participants. The study is titled Romani Realities in the United States: Breaking the Silence, Challenging the Stereotypes,
